| Wall insulation | $1–$4 per sq. ft. |
| Basement insulation | $1.50–$2.50 per sq. ft. |

What affects the price
- Area. Attics are usually easiest; finished walls are hardest to reach.
- Type. Batts are lowest cost; spray foam costs more and also seals air leaks.
- Removal. Old or damaged insulation may need to come out first.
- Air sealing. Sealing gaps before insulating adds cost but improves results.
Tax credits in 2026. Federal tax credits changed. Under the 2025 tax law (Public Law 119-21), the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C) and Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D) do not apply to property placed in service or expenses made after December 31, 2025. State, utility and local rebates may still be available. Check with your utility and state energy office, and talk to a tax professional about your situation.
How to get an accurate quote
- Get at least three quotes. Prices for the same job often vary a lot between contractors.
- Compare the same scope. Make sure each quote covers the same materials, removal, permits and cleanup.
- Check license and insurance. Ask for proof of insurance and look up the contractor's license with your state.
- Get it in writing. A written estimate should list the work, the price, the payment schedule and the warranty.
